The book I cannot finish.
Good things have happened to three of my favorite writers and something weird has happened to me.
First, Tobias Wolff won the $20,000 Story Prize in early March for his short story collection “Our Story Begins.” If you’d like to hear Tobias singing, click here. (Singing?!)
Next, Joyce Carol Oates was married on Friday, March 13th — which was supposedly born of her Gothic sensibilities.
Last but certainly not least, my other favorite writer Rodger Jacobs has seen some luck turn his way in being able to renew his apartment lease for one more year.
Waving my pom-poms for all.
Also impressing me of late is Monique Truong, whose 2003 novel The Book of Salt has done something to me that’s never happened before: I won’t finish the book because it’s so delicious. I keep going back to the beginning, back a chapter or two, back a page or two … I can’t seem to stop savoring her word craft long enough to get even half way through the book. It’s been on my bedside table for over a year. And that’s the beauty of books, that every page sits there patiently for me, to read whenever I choose. (Shoutout to Don at City Lights Books for sending it along to us last year.)

Here’s a cheap, tasty and filling meal. Two packs of Maruchan Ramen Noodle Soup (Beef flavored), and two pre-cooked and frozen sausage patties (microwave or heat the sausage separately). When the noodles are done and steeped in the beef bullion included, chop the sausage patties into small bites. Douse the dish liberally with hot sauce (Tobasco if it’s handy). The Ramen sells here for 20 cents a pack. The pre-cooked sausage is a buck for six patties. Total cost to feed two people a hearty meal=$.60.
The chili pepper sauce is the best anti-depressant I’ve found outside a drug store.
One should not go grocery shopping on an empty stomach.
I did that today and came home with some pretty weird stuff. I hope A.J. will take the broccoli off my hands; I can’t eat green veggies while taking Coumadin to prevent clots in my blood. Yet I stood there filling a 2 pound bag with the prettiest florettes I’ve seen in months. I’ll swear the craving is worse than it ever was for booze.
Nice site!
Broccoli is a good source of calcium, maybe that’s what you’re craving. Check some other sources that you may be able to get calcium from, milk products is obvious.
